I have to be greatful for having two wireless devices on this flight.  I thought that I could only get 30 minutes of free WiFi for each device. I started on my iPAD and when the service expired after 30 minutes I tried to refresh the web page and it still wanted me to pay.  I do not want to cough up $12 bucks for 4 hours of Internet. The service is too slow for streaming music, but at lease I can get on line and read stuff.  I got my net book out of my bag and started session two.  I am now on session three for free. Sylvia and I are on our way to visit her brother in Santa Rosa California.  I have never flown this far in an jet before.  This is the biggest jet that I have flown in. As I close in on my 60th birthday I am glad that my brain can still get the wow factor from doing stuff for the first time. Getting the eyes right For this blog please reference the original drawing below. One of the things that I wanted to accomplish with this project is to learn how to paint using digital tools.  Converting a complex drawing is also a task at hand, but I really want to get good at using Adobe PhotoShop to render a decent image that meets my expectations.  I also wanted to fix a few things that I could not do in the original because of the limitations of the color pencils.  Look at the left eye and notice that I added two eye lashes that I wanted to add in the original but making major drawing changes with color pencils after you have built up a lot of color is near impossible.  This is where traditional painting and digital painting have the advantage, you can apply color on top of color with better results than you can with color pencils. Why a really like my Mac.  I just wanted to say that right now I am working with Adobe CS5 Photoshop on a 30 inch Apple display drawing with my 12 x 19 Wacom tablet all powered by a MackBook Pro 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with solid state drives and 8GB RAM.  This is my dream machine and it works as expected. Yeah it has Windows on it and Linux, but I love drawing just on the Mac.  I would buy another one especially now that the Intel i7 is powering the machine. My fist computer was a Mac II.  I when I cracked a solder joint on the mouse input upgraded the motherboard to a Mac II FX for $2,500.  My next computer was a Mac II CI.  After trying to run AutoCad 3D on it and seeing no end in sight for expensive hardware (compared to PC) I switched to the PC world as soon as Adobe and Illustrator running on Windows.  So now I have come full circle back to using a Mac to draw some twenty four years later.

Yikes, I was listening to Mahavishnu John McLaughlin tonight as I was drawing in PhotoShop.  Sometimes I for get what kind of person I was between High school and my first real job.  It is no surprise to me that I draw the way that I do.  I grew up listening to what I now describe as acid jazz.  Miles Davis playing Bitches Brew and the Mahavishnu orchestra were a daily hymn to my spirit. I am embarking into a new area for my art.  It is an area that I have dabbled in for over a decade.  I have struggled between work and daily life to get to the point of digitizing my color pencil art.  I got a high quality scan of one of my drawings and I decided to take it into PhotoShop and have some fun.  In order to do this work I am using a Wacom Intuos PTZ1231w 12 x 19 tablet and a Apple 30 inch monitor. If you look to the left side of this partial view of my drawing you can see that I am smoothing the colors together.   I took the original file which was 15 x 22 inches and I scaled it up to 40 x 30 inches.  When I am finished I will have another piece of original artwork, but it will be larger and can be printed on archive quality paper or canvas. When I draw with color pencils I can create and think from my imagination a lot better than I can when I work on my computer.  Discovering different ways to be creative is what is great about creating art, sometimes you have to use

Last week my Dodge truck odometer  clicked over to 100K miles.  I have a2006 Dodge 3500 with a Cumins diesel engine in it.  This is the first American truck or car that I have purchased and I love it.  I have driven this truck from coast to coast and from Oregon to Florida and California to New York.  I love driving this truck and I hope to live long enough to put 1,000,000 on it.

I have been running the Chrome OS on my ASUS NetBook for about a week.  I really like it and Chrome OS has broken the strangle hold that my iPad has had as my preferred mobile computing device.  The only reason that I use my iPad is because it has 3G built in.  If my NetBook had a 3G option I would use it exclusively. The only thing that I have not found a solution for is a good way to remote desktop to a Windows Server.  I have not explored every application, but I tried a few and they did not do what I wanted.  For now I am going to switch back to the default OS and use the NetBook with Windows 7 Starter Edition.  I like the fact that with the Net Book I can install the major OS of my choice.  I will try to install Linux next.

For most of it's existence I have not allowed comments to my blog with prior registration and approval by me.  Starting today I am allowing comments.  I want to see who makes comments and it the anti spam program Akismet really works.

My Blog was running on my home server for a few days until I resolved the problems with my site because SiteGround wanted to charge me for a problem that I believe they caused. As a visual artist I have long listend to music as I created art or worked on web sites or other computer projects.  Music has always provided a great back drop for my creativity.  I have also enjoyed attending live music performances.  I wish I could go to more concerts and festivals, but lets say I just love music. So why be a DJ on a radio station when there is all of these digital streams for music on the Internet?  Well good old fashioned radio is a lost art form.  Listening to a live DJ select music from a music library can expose you to new music.  A good DJ can spin a mood or tell a story just by the playlist that he has selected for the show. The power goes out for short periods of time a lot here in Albany during thunder storms.  I have always had the 750 watt UPS on my computers, but this server has a 1200 watt power supply and the 750 watt UPS will not heep it from re-booting during the slightest power fluctuation.

Finally broke down and installed MS Office for 2011 on my Mac Book Pro.  Up to now I have only used MS Office f2010 or Windows on my Fusion virtual machine. MS Office 2008 for the Mac was useless for me because the email program Entourage was so bad it was not worth it.  It is ashamed that the most valuable program that MS Makes is Outlook.  Enterprises are addicted to email and use it for everything. So this will be my first week using Outlook for the Mac.  So far it has many of the features that the Windows version has.  It does not have the Access database program, but most folks do not use this program so it is OK.  I will see how long I can work without switching on my virtual machine.

I have started to use RSYNC again to backup servers.  One thing that has been a problem with my initial synchronization of data is the dreaded error, Connection reset by peer I believe that I have resolved this time out error by adding the following changes to the /etc/ssh/sshd_config file on the server that is making the connection to a remote host. ClientAliveInterval 300 TCPKeepAlive=yes The ClientAliveInterval will to send data across the connection every five minutes. I know that this is not a good method to use for very long.  I will change this to use this method after my initial server copy is complete. Well, after a long absence and much gnawing and gnashing of  teeth with my hosting provider I have reached a solution that gets my Photo Archive back on the Internet.  I started my experience with the Internet back around 1995 with a small HP desktop server and DSL in Portland, Oregon.  I am happy to say that I am back to running my own server out of my home in Albany, GA.  I am using a few new tricks, like Dynamic DNS so I do not have to pay for a static IP address and I am running a Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 server instead of a free Linux distribution. Hardware is also using a few new tricks.  I have given the boot to software RAID of Fake RAID.  I have a hardware RAID controller with a OS array 500GB on RAID 0 and the data is on 3 TB RAID5. Hope you check the archive often as I will be loading up all 10,000 images over the next few days.  And I'll be adding new current photos as I take them.

rdesktop -u lcwormley -d asurams -k ja -g 800x600 192.168.25.40 What is this command?  Well for me the holy grail for any desktop computer operating system is to be able to connect back to a Windows box.  As a system administrator i always have to be able to get to network devices or servers.  Microsoft has always thwarted RDP clones by adding features that break them.  I am  happy to discover that Scientific Linux 6 has Rdesktop included by default and from the command line interface I can connect to a Windows box.  Of course I am using the less secure RDP on my Windows 7 desktop, but there is still hope.

I have ridden on two group rides in Albany, GA since I started bike riding on April 12, 2011. On the first ride last Saturday April 23, I rode from Albany to Dawson which is 54 miles round trip.  I started the ride at 8 AM with five other riders and kept the 18-20 MPH pace with them for about 10 miles before I was dropped.  I happily continued at my pace 17 miles to Dawson took a short break and stocked up with refreshments and rode the 27 miles back home. My second group ride was this evening.  I started out with 6 members of the Heritage Bank racing team.  I kept pace with them for about 5 miles before I was dropped when I could not keep the 23 MPH pace.  I happily rode a 23 mile loop back to my home riding in my aero bars into some mild head winds.  I accidentally rode through the chemical spray from a tractor being applied to the pecan trees that I was riding through. It took over 14 months of living in Georgia before taking a spin on my Serotta Rapid Tour bike.  That is better than the five years it took me to ride a bike when I moved from California to Oregon.  I bent the fron lug on my fork back in austin when we were moving to Albany.  I put my bike on top of my truck in a bike rack and did not put the tire patrially in the windshield to remind me taht a bike was on the rook rack.  I started to drive through a What-A-Burger and my bike hit the warning bar.  I stopped my truck and looked at my bike in horror as I saw the bent fork. Well today I got enough nerve to take it to a bike shop and see how much it would cost to fix it.  The mechanic told me that my ancient 1997 custom Serotta was obsolete and no one made bike frames in inches anymore. After doing a basic CentOS 5.5 KDE install the first application that I install is Google Chrome . If you want to computer to boot straight to the command line, then you need to set your default runlevel to 3. Runlevel 5 will boot you to a GUI by default. In order to change this, edit the /etc/inittab file in your favorite text editor (as root) and locate the first uncommented line in the file. ssh -X finally got CentOS on my Mac Well sometimes the third or fourth time you try something is a charm. I finally got my CentOS desktop to display on my Mac over SSH.  I used this link to make it simple for me. The key missing link is that I finally got that my local machine is the X server and that the remote machine is the client.  Now I can sit outside or anywhere and manage my server using SSH command line or use the KDE Desktop.  All I have to remember is that when the X11 icon shows up on my Mac after I connect to the remote server is to issue the command startkde to get my desktop. I got stuck for a few house installing Drupal 7 on my server.  I am running Fedora Core 14 with SE Linux enabled.  I usually turn off SE Linux because it is a hassle, but on this server I am leaving it on to practice keeping security tight. During the Drupal install I kept getting write permissions errors on my settings.php file and sites/default/files directory.  I am running my Drupal in a directory out side of the default /var/www/html because I have a large partition in /home.  The steps below fixed my permission problems.  i had to log out of Fedora (using GUI) to see the SE Linux alerts. 4. Step 4: Setup Drupal At this point you should have a DocumentRoot directory ready. In this guide we use /var/www/http. At this point we need to ensure that Drupal installation files have a correct SELinux context. So here is the premise, I like a show, I start watching it, it gets cancelled.  I find a series on NetFlix, I start watching it, I find out it only has a few seasons or worse 5 or 6 episodes because it got cancelled.  I know some of the shows were cancelled because of the film writer's strike in 2007-2008 , but some shows do not get the viewer support and they die on the vine. I know my taste are not mainstream all of the time when it comes to music and film, but it is just sad that so many good shows do not make it long term.  I am going to adopt a new mind set when it comes to cancelled TV shows.  I am going to  start reguarding cancelled TV shows as short stories.  Sometimes a TV series can last too long in my opinion and it loses the edge and the writers get bored and start repeating story lines. I have not done this is a while.  I wanted to get Alfresco running on my home server with a preexisting standard Tomcat installed.  It works. Now I want to get Dynamic DNS working so I can start using the Alfresco portal for storing my stuff. I got the Dynamic DNS to work.  Right now I am using DynDNS.org because it is easy to configure with my router firewall.  I am using a NetGear FVS318 as my firewall router and it communicates the changes in my IP address to DynDNS.org. Currently my home server is connected to CI4 and Jenney .  These are the free URLs that I have configured for now.  After we move into the new house I may decide to pay to have my wormley.org URLs linked to my local server.  If I do this then I will be free of the limited storage for image files that is imposed by my hosting provider, Site Ground. I was trying to restart my network on my Fedore14 box with a crontab.
