Albany State University Wireless Network Built with Meraki Equipment.

Image
+ Noore Ghunaym  has a Meraki gnome. This is one of the best network and server administers in the world. I wanted to share some good news about the place that consumes the better part of the day during the week for me.  I work at ASU, not Arizona State University, but Albany State University, home of the Golden Rams in Albany, GA.  If we meet in person I will tell you the back story of why ASU is so important to this tale over a Guinness. Anyway ASU is now featured on the Meraki Cisco web site. There is a Case Study about ASU written on the Customer Stories page .  We are among good company on this page as ASU is listed with MIT and Stanford University among others. My other reason for writing this posting is to make some noise about my friend and co-worker  +Noore Ghunaym .  Most of the time he likes to cut up and be silly, but when it comes to networks, servers and hard drive arrays, this man can do some amazing things. If you are ever on campus and want a tour of our ne

Information Overload

Image
I have a favorite song that is on rotation on SomaFM Groove Salad. It is by the artist "Solid Doctor" and titled "Faustian Bargain" on the album "Space Jazz".  There is a man talking about the Information Super highway in the background as the music plays.  I have listened to this song for years and today I wanted to find out who it was. The man's name is Neil Postman and the interview was from 1995. Thanks to Google, I found this video. CyberSpace:The Internet & Information SuperHighway "Am I using this technology, or is it using me?" Charlene Hunter Gault interviews media theorist and cultural critic Neil Postman on PBS' The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour in 1995. Postman discusses new media and the "Faustian bargain" of technological change in the context of the "Information Superhighway" and the Internet. Read more :

Legend of Samantha

I finally got my comic back online. My big sister,  Deborah Lonnette Wormley Vietze  inspired this re-work. I am in the process of looking for a publisher.

Still looking? You bet I am.

I was doing my weekly floor exercise today.  No, I am not a gymnast, I was vacuuming and mopping the floors in my house.  I was listening to Pandora Radio and a U-2 song came on, "I Still Have Not Found What I Am Looking For".  I purchased this CD when it came out last century.  I was living in Southern California at the time and I use to hang out in Joshua Tree and the desert a lot. Anyway the song got me thinking about the bumper stickers that I see a lot here in Albany, Georgia, "Wise Men Still Seek Him".  I always get dumb founded at religious advertising and I have pondered what is the intention of this sticker.  I have come up with my own sticker as a reply.

Web Development, a bumpy road for me

Image
My first "scratch built" web form It has been a long and bumpy road for my web development career.  I have had many starts and stops over the years.  Every time I get things rolling in my brain the technology landscape has shifted a bit.  Every time I change jobs the technology landscape is different. The way that I learn is like this.  I set up a personal development server for myself. I read books on Safari Online Books so that I can improve my web development skills. Currently I am focusing on using PHP, MariaDB (MySQL), HTML 5 and CSS3. The web site  linked in this blog post is a place for me to test my code. I run these applications on a CentOS 7 server from my home in Albany, GA.  I am not using any fancy development environments or GUI applications. I am reading books and web pages and writing the code directly into the VI text editor from a remote SSH session on my little Linux server. I find that this is the best way for me to learn. I read the text

My Beagle Board Black

I got my BBB, metal box and a USB Wi-Fi adapter today. I have several ideas and projects that are on my mind. Now that I have the hardware in hand time to write some code.

Apache Server Side Includes (SSI)

Image
When I first started using Apache way back in the previous century I used Apache Server Side Includes (SSI) .  Today I decided to fire up this old technology on my development server. I am reading a HTML  5 Forms book and so I am creating a lot of pages using the Linux VI editor.  Coding web pages in a terminal allows me to learn and examine code examples by typing them.  One thing that I did not want to do is develop a bunch of pages that did not have any navigation.  I chose to utilize SSI to load a simple menu file onto my example form pages. My simple main page.  Menu SSI is at the top.  SSI server time is at the bottom. SSI code to include local time on my page. Form from Chapter 1 with the SSI menu. Code view showing the SSI include for the menu file. Header of the form in Chapter 3 with new CSS3 features.  SSI menu is at the top.

My Browser HTML 5 Test

Image
I am going through a training exercise to brush up on my form development.  I am reading a book on Safari Online Books titled Mastering HTML 5 Forms . I decided to do my own browser check to see which one would display my first form correctly. Check your browser here on my form . First Firefox version 33. It does not display the date field calendar selector. Next is IE version 11.0.96. It does not display the date field calendar selector. FChrome version  38.0.2125.104 . It does display the date field calendar selector.

Great SQL Tool

I really got excited this morning when I was researching a solution to a database problem.  I always find myself pouring over other peoples questions on sites like Stack Overflow until I find a solution or a clue to my error or problem.  today I was looking at a solution and discovered that the correct answer was posted using a cool online SQL site, http://sqlfiddle.com/ I know I am not always up to date on stuff, but this site is really great.  It will allow you to build a schema and test your ideas without doing any real damage to a database system.  I have always set up a test database for this purpose, but being able to quickly write a SQL statement and se what idt does all on one web page is really cool.  I can test out ideas quickly and then use the SQL code on the production database.

The Boogie Man of Insomnia Mania

I had a lot of fun drawing this.  Drawing in multiple layers is what I like to do with my art.  I also rarely have any sharp corners in my drawings. Most of the shapes are rounded and smooth. Here is the finished drawing.  You can buy a print of this drawing here .

PHP Parse error in wp-config file

It was a hard start for this WP Blog site .  I had to use my error log to figure out a syntax error in the wp-config.php file.  I went to the Sample file /** Database Charset to use in creating database tables. */ define('DB_CHARSET', 'utf8'); /** The Database Collate type. Don't change this if in doubt. */ define('DB_COLLATE', ''); /**#@+ * Authentication Unique Keys and Salts. My file after correction /**#@+ /** The Database Collate type. Darton Trail Run on 20140927

I ran for the first time in a long time. I love running on trails. Saturday was a nice cool overcast day.  there was a High School cross country meet and several schools were running on the trails.  I avoided the finish line area near the soccer fields.  I usually run on the hospice Center trail and keep on the back side trails.  All of my artificial vascular arterial parts worked fine.

Sylvia's blank garden canvas is ready for plantings

Image
Sylvia's dream garden is finally taking shape.  You may not know if from the video, but the clearing of the beetle infested trees clears the way for real preparation for installing the irrigation system.  Getting the trees removed means that no other heavy equipment will be in areas were plant beds will be located. I am getting excited about the landscaping plans that we have discussed for several years.  When I first met Sylvia, I did not know squat about plants of landscaping.  Yeah I know how to water and cut grass and I loved bulb flowers, but that was about it.  Now after listening to her explain to me about the soil web and plant relationships I am finally getting inspired to build a garden around my home. Broad Street Bridge construction

Image
On 9/18/2014 I walked across the flint River Bridge to go to lunch.  I have not taken a picture of the construction for a while since I am not bike commuting.  Google has enhanced this photo and I really like it. Here are the other photos.

Vascular Maze

I started drawing this drawing shortly after being hit by a Honda Pilot while riding my bike to work.  The incident happened on March 17, 2014.  I stopped work on it because like all of my drawings, I did not like the way it was turning out.  I was not inspired to draw on it until summer. Here is the finished Drawing. Below are photos showing the evolution of the drawing. 20140802_230029 20140804_221409 20140804_221348 20140806_222903 20140806_222850 20140808_215415 20140808_215401 20140808_215339 20140810_132446 20140818_072231 20140818_072222 20140819_072803 Indigo Girls "Let It Be Me" 20140819_072730 20140819_072724 20140819 20140819_232647 20140824_181728 Weather Report "A Remark You Made" 20140824_181707 20140825_072251 20140825_072232 20140825_072229 20140825_072216 20140825_072216 Willis Jackson "Cool Grits" 20140902_230437 20140902_230422 2014
