My First VLAN

I have decided to learn more about computer networking.  I have always had a small network in my home.  I first started to learn networking when I set up a Linux and BSD server back in the last century.  I got a phone modem and connected to the Internet and set up my first web server.  When I upgraded to an always on DSL connection I started to learn more about networking. Today I setup my first VLAN on my home network using Meraki gear.  I have a MX64 security appliance and a MS220-80 switch along with some wireless access points on my network.  I am setting up some virtual servers so I decided to put them on a separate VLAN.  The nice thing about the MX64 is that it allows me to set up VLANs and have a DHCP server for each VLAN. I am going to set up a Microsoft server environment to keep up with the latest server technology.  I will be setting up a SharePoint development environment and some ASP.net web servers.  I will post more of my ...

My Home Network

I have never taken the time to to wire a home that I have purchased for Ethernet or cable.  Over the last two weekends I have taken the time to learn how to do it.  I took on the project because I am doing some renovation in the master bath and the electrical wiring in the house is a mess.  I can fix electrical as it is easy for me.  So now I am fixing the low voltage cabling to the way that I want it. Currently the Internet cable modem is in our front closet.  That is where we told the cable installer to put it when we first moved in back in 2011.  At the time the home had carpet.  Now we have maple hardwood floors and I moved the cable connection from the floor to the wall inside of the closet.  I was in the middle of pulling Ethernet cables to it from the home theater wall in the living room and from my back office when my wife said she wanted to move everything to the closet in the hall.  This seemed like a perfect time to make the move...

+ Noore Ghunaym  has a Meraki gnome. This is one of the best network and server administers in the world. I wanted to share some good news about the place that consumes the better part of the day during the week for me.  I work at ASU, not Arizona State University, but Albany State University, home of the Golden Rams in Albany, GA.  If we meet in person I will tell you the back story of why ASU is so important to this tale over a Guinness. Anyway ASU is now featured on the Meraki Cisco web site. There is a Case Study about ASU written on the Customer Stories page .  We are among good company on this page as ASU is listed with MIT and Stanford University among others. My other reason for writing this posting is to make some noise about my friend and co-worker  +Noore Ghunaym .  Most of the time he likes to cut up and be silly, but when it comes to networks, servers and hard drive arrays, this man can do some amazing things. If you are ever on cam...
