A Maze For Your Eyes

Image
I finished another drawing. I started the drawing on July 9, 2016 and finished it today on October 2, 2016.  I worked on this drawing almost every day in the early mornings before work.  I have not been on my bike commute routine since work started on this drawing.  I have posted my progress on this drawing on my Google Plus Artwork Collection . I also put all of the progress photos in a Google Photo Album . I made several notes on the back of my drawing as usual.  I have titled this self portrait "A Maze for the eyes" because most of my artwork is designed for close inspection.  I like to create visual puzzles and mazes for your eye to follow and get lost while you gaze at the drawing. This is the last drawing that I will complete before I focus on building frames and cutting mats for all of my artwork.  I am preparing for an art show and I hope to get all of my existing artwork framed mad at so that I can display it an art show next year. ...

The Boogie Man of Insomnia Mania

I had a lot of fun drawing this.  Drawing in multiple layers is what I like to do with my art.  I also rarely have any sharp corners in my drawings. Most of the shapes are rounded and smooth. Here is the finished drawing.  You can buy a print of this drawing here .

Revised Launi Art Signature Logo

Image
After may years of procrastination, I finally redrew my Launi Art logo in Adobe Illustrator. Another project completed because I am not out on a bicycle riding my life away. This logo was originally used to sign all of my artwork as far back as 1968. I was using this logo before the redesigned Adobe Acrobat "A". I was inspired to design this logo after a coworker purchased a rotatory engine Mazda and he explained to me how it worked. The engine had 6 cylinders, I thought it would be cool if I could draw a looping star with seven points, or the path for a seven cylinder engine. I took the inspiration from the ability that a 5 point star could be drawn with a continuous line that started and ended at the same point. A six pointed star was drawn using two triangles layered on top of each other with the points of one rotated. I wanted to do an odd numbered star so the 7 pointed star logo was born. When I sign artwork I combine this 7 pointed star with a modified infini...

Launi Art Catalog

I finally have the time to focus on organizing my drawings on a web site .  Although the photographs are not the best it does show what I like to draw.  As I was looking at the dates I was not surprised that when I am riding my bike more each year my drawing productivity drops. Anyway hope you find the images interesting.  https://www.wormley.org/launi-art

Tree mural entry way Day 3 and 4

Image
I finished the wall mural.  It took two more days.  I did not want to pain a bunch or flowers by hand so I broke out my air brush and made three stencils for the flowers.  All in all it turned out OK.  I am a bit rusty on painting, but I really like to paint big. See day one and day two . End of Day three.  Crappy had painted flowers. Major tee trunk and limb redesign.  Made the whole structure thinner at the request of Sylvia. Tune out the voice in your head

Image
I am really inspired about my latest drawing. The image on this page is the bottom right corner of my current work in progress. Most of the time I have a vision of what I am drawing, but there are times when I turn my mind off and let my emotions and artistic ability flow onto the illustration board through the colored pencils without thinking about what is going on. It is in these times when I am at peace. When I tune out the voice in my head that tells me I'm doing it wrong or that I am using the wrong color or that I'm not good enough, this is when I have the freedom to draw like I want. I rode my bike 134 miles this week and my odometer for bike rides in Georgia since January 2010 is at 1,142 miles.  This year alone I have ridden my bike 835.09 miles. I am getting to the point with my cycling just like my drawing where I have tuned out the voice in my head that tells me that I'm too old to ride a bike or that I will never be as strong of a rider like I was in Oregon...

Famous Jane, the low spark of high heeled Ghitas in the Jungle room.

Image
I finished the may latest drawing.  I started it on September 2, 2010 and finished it on October 1, 2012.  The title is as usual based on some of the music that I have been listening to as I draw.  Famous Jane , the low spark of high heeled Ghitas in the Jungle room .  The hyperlinks go to web pages with the lyrics for the songs that inspired my drawing.  Most of the time I am sitting with my drawing and music is flowing into my ears through headphones.  The  music enters my head through my ears, then travels to my brain it sends the feeling from the music into my eyes that then move my fingers to manipulate the color pencils on the drawing board.  The interaction with the music plays a big part in my drawing. I based this drawing on a photograph that I took of a statue while I was in north Georgia.  I liked the statue and the fact that it was not in good shape.  It has lots of pits and cracks. The statue appears to be an Indian w...

Plasticine Corn Rows With Butter Fly Eyes Gone Digital 03

Getting the eyes right For this blog please reference the original drawing below. One of the things that I wanted to accomplish with this project is to learn how to paint using digital tools.  Converting a complex drawing is also a task at hand, but I really want to get good at using Adobe PhotoShop to render a decent image that meets my expectations.  I also wanted to fix a few things that I could not do in the original because of the limitations of the color pencils.  Look at the left eye and notice that I added two eye lashes that I wanted to add in the original but making major drawing changes with color pencils after you have built up a lot of color is near impossible.  This is where traditional painting and digital painting have the advantage, you can apply color on top of color with better results than you can with color pencils. I am also using layers to organize the elements and get the colors and details aligned to give bette...

Plasticine Corn Rows With Butter Fly Eyes Gone Digital 02

Yikes, I was listening to Mahavishnu John McLaughlin tonight as I was drawing in PhotoShop.  Sometimes I for get what kind of person I was between High school and my first real job.  It is no surprise to me that I draw the way that I do.  I grew up listening to what I now describe as acid jazz.  Miles Davis playing Bitches Brew and the Mahavishnu orchestra were a daily hymn to my spirit. You can purchase a print of this drawing from the Wormley Design  Launi Art Shop .

I am embarking into a new area for my art.  It is an area that I have dabbled in for over a decade.  I have struggled between work and daily life to get to the point of digitizing my color pencil art.  I got a high quality scan of one of my drawings and I decided to take it into PhotoShop and have some fun.  In order to do this work I am using a Wacom Intuos PTZ1231w 12 x 19 tablet and a Apple 30 inch monitor. If you look to the left side of this partial view of my drawing you can see that I am smoothing the colors together.   I took the original file which was 15 x 22 inches and I scaled it up to 40 x 30 inches.  When I am finished I will have another piece of original artwork, but it will be larger and can be printed on archive quality paper or canvas. When I draw with color pencils I can create and think from my imagination a lot better than I can when I work on my computer.  Discovering different ways to be creative is ...

[caption id="" align="alignleft" width="415" caption="the caterpillar of the brown hooded owlet moth"] [/caption] Starting a new drawing today. I am going to work from an inspiration that has been in my head since my early twenties. I am also using a new approach to how I get inspiration to my drawing board. I am referencing the images in this blog post from the Internet and my own work. I will display this page on my iPAD and view the images to inspire my drawing. Normally artist print or draw small thumbnail sketches to use for reference. This time I will use digital material and display it digitally for reference. Ground Hog Purple Daze

[caption id="attachment_1445" align="alignleft" width="200" caption="Andie MacDowell in L'Oréal ad"] [/caption] I am working on another drawing.  I decided to write this blog entry as I was drawing and then publish the entry when I finish the drawing.  This drawing is another in my Oh My Girls series.  I chose a picture of Andie McDowell from a L'Oréal ad. I started the drawing the first weekend after returning from a visit to my sister's home in New Jersey for the holidays.  I had the blizzard of 2010 fresh on my mind when I was looking through the September 2010 edition of O magazine looking for inspiration.  When I saw Andie's picture I selected it and started to draw.  I had Ground hog Day in my NetFlix queue so I set the movie to start and went to my work. So much of my art work is influenced by the mash up of music and movies that I have slammed into my mind over the years.   Ground Hog Day is one of my all time favorite...

Nubian Diamond Dawg Flower Child

Image
[caption id="attachment_1352" align="alignleft" width="200" caption="Nubian Flower Child circa 1980"] [/caption] So where did this drawing come from? Well for this drawing I got the inspiration from a drawing for my comic book that I drew in 1980. I do not know why I have a fascination with drawing portraits with my bizarre hippie trippie style.  When I started drawing this image I thought that I was drawing a woman.  As I now look at the finished work it sort of looks like a man.  A lot of my drawings start out one way and end up another way. I am a very moody person and my drawings reflect the way I am feeling.  On one level my art conveys my emotional state during the time that I am working on the drawing. For example when I draw portraits that are smiling, I am happy and when I draw portraits with a sad look, I am sad.  So this drawing the Nubian Flower Child has a dazed look.  This is how I felt during the course of creating this drawing.  ...
